A legally blind vegan baker in Beaverton, Oregon, has opened a plant-based eatery which employs people with disabilities.
Owner Carina Comer, was struggling to find a job – so she opened a bakery that employs other individuals with visual impairments.
“I’m legally blind and because of my love for baking and my struggle to find a place in the workplace, I wanted to open a bakery that employed people with disabilities,” Comer told news outlet Katu.
Bakery
The vegan spot, called Carina’s Bakery, serves baked goods inspired by CEO Comer’s Scandinavian heritage.
There are also signs in the eatery which alert the customers that all employees are visually impaired, and advise them to be patient.
“It takes us a little longer.
“We’re still getting used to our adaptive system that has its own quirks,” said Comer, referring to the adaptive devices she installed to assist them.
Vegan
Comer went on to discuss veganism: “It fits in well with what I am trying to do with this bakery because I want people to feel like they belong and are being treated right, and I should do the same with the animals and the baked goods.”
Carina’s Bakery’s grand opening is officially set for mid-November, but the eatery is open right now.
