High street chain Greggs has now launched its vegan wrap instore.

While the outlet is better known for its pasties and sausage rolls, it has launched a revamped range of sandwiches and salads, in a bid to appeal to a wider demographic.

Among the new menu is the vegan Mexican Bean Wrap, which as part of the Balanced Choice range, contains 345 calories. It also counts as one of the recommended ‘five-a-day’ of fruit and veg.

Meal deal

The wrap – which is part of Gregg’s £3 ‘meal deal’ which includes a hot or cold drink – features mixed beans, sweetcorn and peppers in a spicy tomato sauce with guacamole, chipotle chilli sauce, and salad leaves.

While many vegans will be pleased to have an option in Greggs, some have tried campaigning for the chain to add plant-based sausage rolls to the menu, with animal rights charity PETA launching a petition in a bid to see the snack hit shelves earlier this year (now closed).

PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, Dawn Carr, said: “More people than ever are clamouring for healthy vegan options from their favourite on-the-go eateries. PETA is calling on Greggs to heed this growing demand, add a vegan sausage roll to the menu, and watch the cruelty-free treats fly off the shelves.”

Vegan options

Earlier this year the Roger Whiteside – Chief Executive of Greggs – pledged to add more vegan options to the menu.

He said: “We’re aware people would like those types of options in some of our savoury categories and things, but they’re more difficult to achieve, frankly, because what we’re looking to do is to find things that have broad appeal because they taste great.

“In the year ahead, we will continue to focus on delivering the outstanding value and taste that Greggs is famous for.”
