A Michelin-starred restaurant says has become the U.K‘s first to serve vegan meat on its menu.
Harwood Arms, in London, is known for its meaty menu. But as demand for animal-free options have grown, it has added a vegetarian Scotch egg to its menu.
The egg, which is made using vegan bacon from THIS, offers a meat-free alternative to the establishment’s famous Glamorgan Scotch egg and costs £5.50.
‘Actually quite emotional’
In a statement sent to Plant Based News, Andy Shovel, co-founder of THIS, said that meat alternatives have ‘often been met with skepticism by Michelin-starred restaurants and chefs’, so he was ‘actually quite emotional’ when the Harwood Arms team said they wanted to put THIS on the menu.
He added that the collaboration represents ‘a major step forward in plant-based food innovation’ where products are now so realistic, they are welcomed into the world of fine dining.
Shovel concluded that the team can ‘pat ourselves on the back’ after the endorsement from the Harwood Arms, as the chefs ‘don’t mess about when it comes to ingredients’.
‘Just what we were looking for’
Sally Abé, head chef at the Harwood Arms, added that as the Scotch egg at the Harwood Arms has been so loved over the years, the meat-free alternative ‘had to really deliver on taste and texture’.
She said the team spent ‘a great deal of time perfecting the recipe’ and the addition of THIS vegan meat gave them us ‘just what [they] were looking for’.
