Fat-free vegan bacon is set to launch in Sainsbury’s stores across the UK.
The bacon was created by Vivera, which sells a range of its products – including its vegan steak – in UK supermarkets.
According to the brand, it wanted to ‘mimic real bacon pieces and to make a product with the same taste, texture and appearance’. It claims the result is ‘a true bacon taste, look and feel’ with a substantial health benefit due to fact that the pieces contain zero fat.

“Especially in the British market we foresee a large demand for our fat free vegan bacon,” Gert Jan Gombert, Commercial Director of Vivera, said in a statement.
“Traditionally it is one of the product categories where meat has been difficult to replace. Our product development team has done an outstanding job in making the bacon pieces as tasty as the available regular bacon while reducing the fat level to zero.
“The overwhelming positive feedback from British consumers for our vegan steak, after its introduction last year, made us decide to give again priority to the British market and have the first launch to market here.”

In addition, Sainsbury’s will add Vivera’s vegan steak to 430 stores from next week. The product, which made its UK debut in Tesco last year, has sold more than 1,000,000 units. Around 40,000 sold with days of its launch.
“We are overwhelmed by the great success of the 100 percent plant-based steak,” Gert Jan Gombert told Plant Based News at the time. “Within a few days the first delivery of 40,000 items is nearly sold out. The sales could have been much larger, some supermarkets were sold out within a day.
“The consumers in England are almost without exception very enthusiastic about the taste and texture of the steak. The hashtag #Vivera almost exploded on Instagram.”
Since then, Vivera has increased its production capacity, saying it ‘is now able to introduce the highly popular vegan steak to more UK consumers’.
