A charity is launching vegan mittens inspired by Bernie Sanders after a photo of the politician went viral.

The US Senator, who ran for Presidency in 2016, was pictured at the inauguration of Joe Biden wearing mittens made by Jen Ellis – a second-grade teacher in Vermont.

The image has since garnered global media attention and has been turned into hundreds of different memes.

Now, PETA has created a vegan version of the mittens, which are made from 100 percent soft acrylic yarn.

Retailing at $39.99, the mittens are emblazoned with the organization’s rabbit logo. PETA states: “Wear them anytime you want to keep warm while promoting kindness to sheep. Whether you’re holding posters at an anti-wool demonstration or just out for a walk in the cold.”

‘Cruelty-free outerwear’

“PETA is once again asking kind shoppers to choose cruelty-free outerwear,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman.

“When it comes to feeling pain and suffering, a sheep is no different from a human. So, wool-free mittens are a wonderful way to put ‘Not Me, Us’ into practice.”

Bernie Sanders

Back in 2019, Sanders slammed factory farming for its environmental impact.

The politician tweeted: “Factory farms are responsible for 1.4 trillion pounds of animal waste in America.

“They are a threat to the water we drink and the air we breathe, and it is unbelievable to me that Republicans in Congress have been working overtime to exempt factory farms from environmental laws.”

However, Sanders did not mention veganism. He later tweeted: “We must end a system where the top 10 percent of farmers get 77 percent of subsidies from the USDA. Our job is to help family farmers who are struggling. Not to make billion-dollar corporations even richer.”
