Fashion Giant Topshop Launches Vegan Shoe Line

Global fashion giant Topshop is launching a vegan shoe collection for the first time.

The range, which is made from animal-free materials and glue, features six different styles of sandals which come in two different colors to make up a 12-shoe collection.

The range, which is available from today, is handmade in Spain and approved by vegan charity PETA. Prices range from £42 to £59.

Vegan shoes

“We are really excited to be launching our first vegan collection this April,” Topshop’s Fashion Director, Maddy Evans, said.

“Initially we’re focusing on footwear and introducing six new styles that are produced alongside our premium shoe lines in Spain.

“We can’t wait to see how shoppers respond to the design-led collection and how far we can push vegan products across our accessories offering.”

Topshop and sustainability

While the shoe range is vegan, there are questions around Topshop’s ethics when it comes to sustainability and working practices, according to Good On You, which describes itself as ‘the world’s leading source for fashion brand ratings’. It gives Topshop the rating of ‘It’s A Start’ – meaning it has taken some steps towards ethical practices, but still has some way to go.

“From the information available, it’s clear Topshop needs to make major changes if it wants to reduce its environmental impact, and in particular should start using more eco-friendly materials,” the organization says.

“Having said all that, even if Topshop does incorporate more sustainable materials, as one of the world’s biggest fast fashion chains, Topshop’s business model is inherently unsustainable. By emphasizing fleeting trends over timeless designs and producing huge amounts of poorly-made clothes, it’s hard to see how Topshop can become a truly ethical brand without ditching a fast fashion model.”
