The last year has seen huge innovation in the plant-based sector, with retailers and restaurants starting to offer vegan options across the board.
One of the biggest news stories in this area was the appointment of self-described ‘plant-pushing’ chef Derek Sarno as Executive Chef-Director of Plant Based Innovation for UK retail giant Tesco.
Sarno has enthusiastically embraced the role, and took to the stage at this week’s Compassion In World Farming’s Extinction and Livestock Conference.
Social media
His appearance on stage prompted excitement on social media.
The Vegan Strategist Tobias Leenaert took to Facebook to write: “Derek Sarno is the director of plant-based food innovation at Tesco (yes, there now is such a position!) and does magic with mushrooms.”
PBN Co-founder Robbie Lockie added: “Derek Sarno is the new director of plant-based food innovation at Tesco, he does incredible things with mushrooms.
“Exciting times ahead! #extinction17.”
New chapter
Blogging about the position earlier this year, Sarno wrote: “I’ve accepted a new role as Executive Chef-Director of Plant Based Innovation for Tesco.
“And wouldn’t ya know it, they’re the world’s third largest food retailer. Yep, that means I’m moving to the UK and starting a new chapter.
“I’m grateful to have the support of such awesome friends, family and the wicked healthy community.”
Stay tuned for PBN’s upcoming interview with Derek Sarno.
