Pizza chain Domino’s has added plant-based cheese to its menu in its Australian outlets.
Responding to an overwhelming demand to its customer survey on vegan cheese in November last year, the company announced that US brand Follow Your Heart’s vegan mozzarella is available to replace dairy cheese on all its pizzas for a limited time from today, for an extra $2.95.
Domino’s also unveiled three dedicated vegan pizzas: the Vegan Avocado Veg, the Vegan Spicy Trio and the Vegan Margherita, and confirmed that all its sauces and bases are vegan-friendly.
‘Blown away’
“We were blown away by the response to the survey and for this product in general,” said Domino’s CEO Australia and New Zealand, Nick Knight.
“We pride ourselves on our ‘people-powered pizza’ mantra and listen to what our customers want.
“The popularity of, and demand for, vegan products has increased considerably over the years so it’s great we are now able to offer this high quality, non-GMO, plant-based and preservative-free vegan cheese.”
‘Excellent’
Responses to the vegan cheese and pizzas on social media so far have been positive, with many describing the new additions as ‘excellent’.
One user wrote: “Our family just tried all the vegan pizzas and the verdict is excellent.
“Will definitely be buying each one again. Cheese pizza, vego avocado one, spicy veg one, and margarita.”
Winner
Another added: “Thank you for making me a very happy #vegan.
“This is #delicious, and as I was picking this up I saw at least three people in vegan shirts picking up theirs.
“You’re on to a winner!”
Global?
People craving dairy-free alternatives in the UK and US are calling on the international pizza chain to follow Australia’s lead and introduce vegan cheese.
One vegan took to Twitter to write: “Dominos_UK, when can we expect vegan pizza in the UK? Dominos_AU (and Pizza Hut UK) are way ahead of you.
“Don’t underestimate how much vegans and lactose-intolerant people love pizza.”
Whether the vegan cheese and pizzas remain on the menu in Australia permanently will depend on customer demand.
A Dominos spokesperson said: “Initially vegan cheese will be available in stores for a limited time, and if customers love it as much as we do, we will look to make this a regular feature of the Domino’s menu.”
