An Auckland, New Zealand company is recalling all batches of its coconut milk powder due to the presence of an ‘undeclared allergen’ – which turned out to be cow’s milk.
The Ministry for Primary Industries [MPI] has alerted consumers on Tuesday that zero-waste franchise The Source Bulk Foods was recalling all batches of its coconut milk product.
The master franchise of the zero-waste store is in Australia, which imports the products to New Zealand.
The Source Bulk Foods operates two stores in Auckland – one in Milford, and one in Kumeu.
‘Off shelves’
The New Zealand shop owner Andrea Watt told outlet Newshub: “We’ve taken products off shelves and put up a notice in the store.”
Although unable to estimate how much of the contaminated powder had been sold to customers, as the products are sold in bulk, she said ‘[they] hadn’t sold much, because [they ‘re] a new business’.
Now the company is working with the MPI to learn more about how the contamination occurred.
Recall
The recall applies to all coconut milk powder sold at the Milford store with the expiration date of April 24, 2018, and all coconut milk powder sold at the Kumeu store with an expiration date in November 2018.
Customers can return the product to the retailer for a full refund.
The recall does not affect any other product distributed by The Source Bulk Foods.
