Animal rights campaigners have called on The National Fish & Chip Awards to add a ‘Best Vegan Fish and Chips’ category for 2019.

Activists from charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals [PETA] have sent a letter to the CEO of Seafish, which administers the awards, with the proposal.

‘Under threat’

PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, Dawn Carr, said: “We all know that our oceans and the animals who live there are under threat.

“Adding a ‘Best Vegan Fish and Chips’ category to your awards would be a great way to showcase some of the progressive businesses offering an alternative to fish flesh and provide Seafish with the opportunity to highlight an option that takes some of the pressure off our troubled seas.”

Vegan fish and chips

Vegan fish and chips is usually made from tofu, wrapped in nori seaweed, then battered and fried.

It is sold in an increasing number of outlets, including on the menus of previous National Fish & Chip Award winners – including Scotland’s Land & Sea and Simpsons Fish & Chips.

PETA showcased a number of eateries serving the dish in a recent feature.
