Celebrity actor Cameron Diaz and fashion entrepreneur Katherine Power have a launched a vegan wine brand in the U.S called Avaline.
The brand currently stocks two wines: a Rosé with ‘notes of melon and zest’ and dry White ‘with a crisp, fresh finish’. Both retail at $24 a bottle.
Avaline’s wines are made from organic grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, and contain no added artificial ingredients, added sugars, colors, or concentrates.
‘A cleaner wine’
According to Spirited, the Bad Teacher star said: “I enjoyed wine for many-a-year and never questioned it… I figured it was the most responsible alcohol choice because it was made with fermented grapes!
“But I had no idea of the process. One of the first conversations Katherine and I had about making a cleaner wine was ‘what are we going to add to it?’’ We soon learned it wasn’t what you added, it’s what you didn’t add.”
Power added that most wine isn’t made with organic grapes and can be ‘manipulated’ with more than 70 different additives.
She added: “When we started asking for clean or organic wines in grocery stores, hotels, and restaurants, all we got were eye-rolls. One of our main goals is to increase the prevalence of clean wine in the market, making it available where our consumer is already shopping.”
Is wine vegan?
Several animal products, including gelatin, isinglass, and egg, are commonly used during the winemaking process – making many unsuitable for a vegan diet.
