Fast-food giant Burger King has announced it’s launching plant-based ‘chicken’ nuggets* in Germany.
The meat-free products, made by The Vegetarian Butcher, will be available in selected outlets from September 1.
Burger King said the launch was in reaction to ‘the trend towards conscious nutrition and a growing number of guests who are increasingly relying on plant-based products’.
‘Soft and meat-like’
In an online statement, CEO of The Vegetarian Butcher Hugo Verkuil, who is ‘delighted’ with the collaboration, said: “The Nuggets are soft and meat-like on the inside, crispy and golden on the outside and offer a delicious vegetable-based alternative for all meat lovers who want to reduce their meat consumption.”
Director Marketing at Burger King Deutschland Klaus Schmäing added: “In order to be able to offer guests and fans a very special taste experience, BURGER KING® has worked intensively on product development and has brought in The Vegetarian Butcher as a strong partner who represents the same quality standards as BURGER KING
“Burger King is the first to offer its guests the opportunity to try meat-free chicken. Of course, nobody has to do without the crispy taste experience like the original: ‘Without meat’ means in this case ‘with maximum taste’.”
*Speaking to Plant Based News about the plant-based nuggets, a spokesperson for Burger King De. said the product is ‘prepared’ in the same fryer as its meat counterpart.
However, it added that tests from the Fresenius Institute confirms there are no animal products or traces of them after frying.
