Brazil has moved closer to banning animal testing for cosmetics.

The state of Minas Gerais has voted to end the use of animals in cosmetics testing – making it the sixth state to do so, joining São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Paraná in voting in favor of doing so.

As Brazil is one of the biggest cosmetics markets in the world, the vote has been described as ‘breakthrough’ and ‘a huge success for animals that bring us one step closer to a global end to cruel animal testing for cosmetics’.

Making its way through Senate

According to Cruelty Free International: “The news comes the same week our petition with the Body Shop to secure an end to cosmetics testing across the world via a resolution at the United Nations reaches an amazing 7 million signatures!

“In the meantime our Brazilian bill that would require most cosmetics tests in the country to be carried out without the use of animals is making its way through the national Senate.

Our task now is to get the legislation through the Senate and to secure a yes from the president. If you have family or friends in Brazil, please urge them to register on the senate website where there is a public opinion poll on the bill.”
