London – Following discussions with PETA, popular commuter spot Bagel Factory will become the first chain to add a vegan cream cheese to its menu – satisfying compassionate and health-conscious customers across the UK and Ireland. In recognition of this innovative step, PETA is awarding Bagel Factory its prestigious Proggy Award (“Proggy” is for “progress”), which recognises animal-friendly achievements in commerce and culture.

To launch the vegan cream cheese, Bagel Factory has created a veggie-filled bagel with non-dairy cream cheese, avocado, tomatoes, and black olives, available for £4.29 (a bagel with vegan cream cheese only is £2.49) at all stores from 19 April.

“More and more consumers are seeking on-the-go vegan options”, says PETA’s vegan corporate projects manager, Dawn Carr. “By responding to the growing demand for plant-based fare, Bagel Factory is making it possible for the many people who can’t – or won’t – consume dairy foods to enjoy a good bagel with a creamy spread.”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that plant-based cheeses and milks have none of the artery-clogging animal fat and cholesterol of dairy foods, which often also contain traces of pus and bacteria from cows’ infected udders. And vegans have lower rates of heart disease, strokes, diabetes, cancer, and obesity than meat-eaters do.
