An all-vegan artisan cheese shop – the UK’s first – will open in London today.

La Fauxmagerie in Brixton Village, which is the brainchild of sisters Charlotte and Rachel Stevens, which stock a range of products from brands including Kinda Co., Tyne Chease, and Black Arts Vegan.

Changing perception

“We’re so pleased to be bringing the first-ever plant-based cheesemonger to the UK,” Charlotte Stevens, Co-founder of La Fauxmagerie, told Brixton Buzz. “As someone who is conscious about making ethical dietary choices and also suffers with lactose intolerance, I’ve experienced first hand the difficulty in finding a dairy substitute that is adequate in both flavor and texture.”

“Our aim with La Fauxmagerie is to bring the most delicious cheeses together in one place, so that those going dairy-free needn’t compromise on flavor nor variety,” Rachel Stevens, Co-founder of La Fauxmagerie, added.

“Historically, vegan cheeses have been seen as undesirable alternatives to their dairy counterparts; La Fauxmagerie aims to challenge that perception by stocking artisanal vegan cheeses that are truly delicious in their own right.”

Vegan cheese

The store opening follows a recent poll which discovered almost half (45 percent) of Brits would like to go vegan but say they can’t give up cheese.

“Despite veganism’s rise in popularity many Brits believe there aren’t enough vegan alternatives to keep a plant-based lifestyle interesting and enjoyable,” Simon Orchard, UK Country Manager at vegan cheese brand Violife which commissioned the poll, said in a statement sent to Plant Based News.

“Violife seeks to address this issue by offering a host of great-tasting dairy free alternatives that slice, grate and melt just like cheese, making it very easy for people to enjoy their favorites such as toasties, pizzas or a pasta bake, without the dairy.”
