A petition has been launched asking Canadian fast food chain A&W to make its Beyond Burger sandwich ‘100 percent vegan-friendly’.
The high-tech patty launched in the chain’s almost Canadian100 outlets on July 9, in a build featuring lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard, burger sauce and mayo.
While many fans have positively reviewed the sandwich, others have given it a miss, because of cross-contamination issues with the cooking process. The plant-based patty is reportedly cooked alongside meat on the same grill. In addition, the mayo and burger sauce contain animal secretions.
Petition
The petition, which has garnered more than 1,200 signatures – beating its goal of 1,000, says: “A&W Canada has announced that it will be launching the popular plant based vegan Beyond Burger patty on July 9.
Unfortunately, A&W has also stated that the burger patty will be cooked on the same grill as animal meat products, and contain non-vegan condiments including mayo & A&W’s ‘Uncle Sauce’.
“Please sign and ask A&W to make its Beyond Burger 100 percent vegan by using only vegan condiments, making sure to use a vegan bun, and setting aside a separate space on the grill for non-animal based ingredients. Vegan alternatives for the condiments and a cheese topping if desired are plentiful, delicious, and cruelty-free.”
