Almost half (45 percent) of Brits would like to go vegan but say they can’t give up cheese, according to a new poll shared with Plant Based News.

The poll, by vegan cheese company Violife, looks at some of the reasons stopping people from ditching animal altogether.

It found that there are many misconceptions around what vegans do and don’t eat, as well as a lack of knowledge around the alternative products available – for example, 24 percent of poll respondents don’t know melting vegan cheese products exist.

Vegan cheese

According to the poll results, almost half of Brits (45 percent) claim they would like to follow a vegan lifestyle but ‘would miss cheese too much’. Other products they would miss following a plant-based diet include meat (34 percent) and chocolate (11 percent).

Huge numbers of respondents were confused about what a plant-based diet includes. A staggering 31 percent believe you can’t eat lettuce, with 22 percent thinking honey is suitable, and six percent believing eggs are vegan.

Other barriers include people thinking there are a lack of exciting food options (19 percent), difficulty planning mealtimes (18 percent) and vegan options being too expensive (16 percent).

Vegan options

“Despite veganism’s rise in popularity many Brits believe there aren’t enough vegan alternatives to keep a plant-based lifestyle interesting and enjoyable,” Simon Orchard, UK Country Manager at Violife, said in a statement sent to Plant Based News.

“Violife seeks to address this issue by offering a host of great-tasting dairy free alternatives that slice, grate and melt just like cheese, making it very easy for people to enjoy their favorites such as toasties, pizzas or a pasta bake, without the dairy.”
