Today is World Plant Milk Day – and global vegan organization Veganuary is calling on coffee chains to drop the surcharge on plant milk.

Most high-street coffee chains currently charge 20-50p extra when customers choose plant milk (soy, oat, almond, coconut).

An exception is AMT Coffee, which always offers plant milk for free, and is encouraging customers to try plant milk on World Plant Milk Day by offering 25 percent off all coffees ordered with it.

‘Cow’s milk is a climate catastrophe’

“Charging extra for plant milk is effectively a tax on climate-conscious customers,” Toni Vernelli, Head of Communications at Veganuary, said in a statement sent to Plant Based News.

“Animal farming is responsible for more than half of all food-related greenhouses gases and cows are the prime cause, with each one burping out 600 liters of methane a day. The true cost of cow’s milk is a climate catastrophe.

“This World Plant Milk Day we’re calling on all coffee chains to follow AMT’s lead and help halt the devastating impact animal farming has on our planet by providing free planet-friendly plant milk for all customers – before we all pay the price.”

World Plant Milk Day

Today (August 22) is World Plant Milk Day (WPMD), an initiative conceived by Robbie Lockie – Co-founder of Plant Based News.

As the data shows, millions of people around the world are ditching dairy, and opting instead for healthy, delicious drinks made entirely from plants. There are so many reasons to do this: saving the planet, improving your health, and helping stop the exploitation of cows in the dairy industry.

Because of this, food producers, retailers, and restaurants are making it easier than ever to phase out dairy, offering delicious plant-based alternatives to traditional products, including milk, ice-cream, and cheese.

Challenge

World Plant Milk Day makes it even easier to ditch dairy, with its 7-Day Dairy-Free Challenge. Just as it sounds, it is a week-long initiative which will help you get started on your exciting dairy-free journey.

If you sign up to take part, you’ll receive daily emails, with all the information, support and recipes you need to succeed.

So why not join the millions of people worldwide who are opting for kinder, more sustainable, and delicious plant milk?
