Vegan runner, Andreas Vojta, has added to his haul of national titles with a new win – taking his total to 33.

The Austrian athlete picked up his latest title at his country’s recent National Championships.

He told Great Vegan Athletes (GVA) that he was able to defend his 5,000m national title and get silver for the 1,500m, adding that he’s happy he ‘can show this consistency for a decade now already’.

Eating vegan

According to Vojta, eating a plant-based diet at the Championships was easy: “For the meals, I had the hotel breakfast where you can always find some oats with plant milk, bread, jam, fruits and so on. Besides that, I also had one pizza and on the second day some curry-style dish,” he told GVA.

“For a runner, it’s just important to have a meal rich in carbohydrates which is not too hard to digest. And pasta, pizza, rice, you can really find everywhere. So there is also no reason for not eating plant-based during competitions while showing great performances.”

Vojta is vegan for ‘ethical and environmental reasons’.

“And of course vegan means vegan,” he says. “There are no exceptions, even though the food options can be really sh*tty sometimes at the athlete accommodations during events.

“I didn’t really think of the health aspects before my transition but now I feel and see that my food choices in general are much healthier even though I still have a sweet tooth.”

Vojta will soon be competing at the European Championships.
