An 88-year-old vegan has scaled Mount Kilimanjaro – and is waiting for confirmation from The Guinness Book of Records to see if he’s the oldest person to ever reach the summit.
Fred Distelhorst took on the peak with his granddaughter Ellen Edgerton, who called him and asked if he wanted to attempt to climb one of the world’s highest peaks with her.
He told CBS: “She’s really special to me and I wanted to be with her.”
Vegan
Distelhorst credits his health to his vegan diet. He said: “I think I’m in pretty good shape even though I’m a little old guy.”
Despite describing the climb as ‘a bit tedious and boring’, Distelhorst said it was ‘worth the view. The skies were clear blue’.
The 88-year-old only needed oxygen during the final ascent of the six-day-climb.
Motivation
Distelhorst says he is motivated to stay healthy because he wants to see his grandchildren grow.
He said: “I want to live long enough to see those kids get an education and get into the real world.”
The pensioner should know within a couple of weeks whether his climb will land him in the record books.
