An Australian mountain climber has reached the top of Nepal’s Himalayan mountain – and flied the vegan flag.
‘Fueled by plants and wearing no down or leather’, Dean Maher has achieved his goal of reaching the Himlung Himal peak (7,126m).
‘Proud’
Maher told VeganFlag.org about flying the flag.
“Flying the vegan flag was a very proud moment for me.
“It’s so great that the vegans of this world now have a flag to symbolize our passion. It will definitely be coming along for the ride on all my future climbs.”
Mounteneering
The mountain climber, who started an Instagram account dedicated to sharing his trips, is also planning on climbing Everest in 2019.
“As long as I can stay fit and healthy I’m looking forward to challenging myself every year. Everest 2019 is on the cards, then who knows after that.”
Maher will be climbing Manaslu next, which is 8,163m high.
Equipment
Maher has said that finding certain high altitude equipment can be tricky.
“There’s quite a few options for tops and bottoms using synthetic insulation but it’s the gloves/mittens which is where it gets tricky,” he said.
“For the high altitude items if they don’t have leather palms they’re filled with feathers. I only narrowly avoided frost bite this year with my chosen gloves and I thought they would be ok.
“For my next trip I’m going to have to find a better alternative or risk losing some digits.”
