Vegan Endurance Athlete Rich Roll Completes ‘Hardest’ Race

Vegan ultra-endurance athlete Rich Roll has successfully completed a ‘swimrun race’, which included swimming and running 46 miles (75km).

The 50-year-old American athlete raced across 26 islands of the Stockholm Archipelago last Monday.

Competitors raced in pairs during the 52 swim-run transitions. Roll raced with his longtime coach, Chris Hauth. They came in nearly three hours behind the winning team.

Roll told The New York Times: “When you finish a swim you land on these giant rock slabs, which are incredibly slippery. The whole thing is an obstacle course.”

One participant bashed his knee, while another split his chin, added Roll.

He even thought he was in danger of not finishing, due to the difficulty of the race, but he said he pushed through pain and discomfort and finished as the top American team, in less than 11 hours.

The island-to-island ÖTILLÖ swimrun race was ‘the hardest thing [he ‘s] ever done’.

“The main thing is realizing that even if you feel terrible for a while, that’s not how you’re going to feel the whole time” he said. “Things change if you keep moving.”

The 5-feet-11 and 165 pound vegan athlete is also a two-time Ultraman finisher – a race in which competitors swim, bike, and run 320 miles over three days.
