Vegan F1 athlete Lewis Hamilton has earned his 92nd career Grand Prix victory after winning the Portuguese Grand Prix.
As a result of the victory, he also broke the Formula 1’s all-time win record. Michael Schumacher had held the record until now.
Following the race, the socially-distanced crowd rewarded Hamilton with a standing ovation. At the same time, the athlete celebrated with his team and father.
‘F1 dream’
In light of the victory, Lewis Hamilton said: “I could only ever have dreamed of being where I am today. I didn’t have a magic ball when I chose to come to this [Mercedes] team and partner with these great people, but here I am.
“Everything we do together – we are all rowing in the same direction and that’s why we’re doing what we’re doing.
“And my dad’s here and my step mum Linda, and Roscoe [Hamilton’s dog]. It is going to take some time for it to fully sink in. I was still pushing flat out as I came across the line. I can’t find the words at the moment.”
Afterwards, Lewis Hamilton posted about the F1 win on Instagram. He wrote: “Today is beyond my wildest dreams. I couldn’t be here today without my team, continuously innovating and pushing the barrier in this game.
“I’m so grateful to have you guys by my side through this journey. It doesn’t matter how many Sunday’s we do this, it’s always a challenge. None of this has been easy. It’s been such a privilege to work with you all.”
He then added: “I’m thinking of Michael today, I will forever have the utmost admiration and respect for you, it’s truly been an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence as you. And to you #TeamLH, I can’t express how grateful I am for all of you. All I can say is thank you, from the bottom of my heart for always believing in me.”
