An Australian radio DJ has slammed vegans for saying that meat production contributes to climate change.

KIIS FM radio host Kyle Sandilands was doing a phone-in earlier today when a caller claimed a group of vegans had ‘ambushed’ a local Bunnings sausage sizzle fundraiser which was being held for the victims of recent bushfires in New South Wales, which have killed four people and more than 1,000 koalas.

According to reports, vegans said sausages at the fundraiser should be plant-based, because of the impact meat production has on the environment.

‘Vegan hippy’

Sandilands was reportedly angry to hear the tale – and branded vegans ‘not well’.

“If you want to be a vegan hippy, that’s fine but choose your location,” he said.

“I know they are not well because they’ve got no meat in them – they’re very grey looking and slow humans.”

Meat and the environment

There is a wealth of data to show that rearing animals for meat is having a devastating impact on planet – including a 2018 paper described as the ‘most comprehensive analysis to date of the damage farming does to the planet’, which was published in the journal Science.

“A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on planet Earth, not just greenhouse gases, but global acidification, eutrophication, land use and water use,” Joseph Poore at the University of Oxford, UK, who led the research, told The Guardian.

“It is far bigger than cutting down on your flights or buying an electric car.”
