There has been a huge spike in the number of people searching the term ‘vegan’ on Google – and it’s all down to the film Okja, according to animal rights group PETA.

The film, which has an animal rights perspective, tells the story of ‘superpig’ Okja, who has been genetically modified to feed as many people as possible.

Okja grows up with young girl Mila, but when the super-corporation who ‘owns’ Okja try to take the animal to slaughter, a dramatic battle ensues.

The movie was directed by Bong Joon-ho and stars Ahn Seo-hyun (as Mila) and Tilda Swinton.

Social media

Following the film’s release on Netflix, social media was awash with people claiming it had inspired them to try a vegan diet.

In addition, according to PETA, there was a 65 per cent increase in the number of Google searches for the term ‘vegan’ in the six weeks following the film’s launch in mid-May.

The recent slew of plant-based movies – including smash hit What The Health – are responsible for inspiring people to go vegan, according to PETA.

PETA’s Vice President Colleen O’Brien told VegNews: “In July alone, PETA received more than 21,000 requests for our vegan starter kits—double the number of an average month.

“These powerful films are creating a new generation of vegans, one screening at a time.”
