The world’s first vegan Jewish center has opened in London, following a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Located on Finchley Road in Golders Green, the Jewish Vegetarian Society’s recently turned vegan facility features a garden, meeting rooms, hall, and kitchen.

More than 300 people attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the center’s opening, including vegan MP Kerry McCarthy.

‘We are delighted’

Lara Balsam told Jewish News: “We are delighted to open the doors to the world’s first Jewish vegan center at just the right time, when community centers are in short supply, and when the production of animal products is crueler than ever.

“We hope to inspire the creation of many more such hubs around the world, servicing the ever-increasing demand for and interest in Jewish veganism.”

Veganism

Back in 2017, more than 70 rabbis from around the world signed a declaration calling on Jews to go vegan.

The push for an animal-free diet aligns with central principles of the Jewish tradition, which includes not causing pain to another living creature.

According to the Jewish Vegetarian Society: “This approach to sustenance is an expression of our shared Jewish values of compassion for animals, protection of the environment, and concern for our physical and spiritual well-being.”
