The UK Labour Party launched an ‘Animal Welfare Manifesto’ this week – which promised a raft of protections for animals should the party get into power.
The 50-point manifesto includes proposals to ban lobsters from being boiled alive, to stop imports of foie gras, and a long-term objective to phase out animal testing entirely among others.
In addition, the opposition party pledged to appoint an animal welfare commissioner, who would focus on enforcing welfare standards in new legislation and post-Brexit deals.
From bringing forward the landmark Hunting Act to protecting the treatment of domestic animals under the Animal Welfare Act, we’ve always kept animal rights close to our hearts.

‘Bring animal welfare into the 21st century’
Shadow environment secretary, Sue Hayman, announced the manifesto, saying the party wants to ‘bring Britain’s animal welfare policy into the 21st century’.
“From bringing forward the landmark Hunting Act to protecting the treatment of domestic animals under the Animal Welfare Act, Labour has always placed the welfare of animals high on the policy agenda,” she added.
“Labour will ensure that we have a comprehensive legislative agenda in place to make sure that the UK has animal rights protections equal to or better than anywhere in the world.”
