NBA star and Celtics Point Guard Kyrie Irving first spoke out about the benefits of a plant-based diet back in October.

Talking after a pre-season game, he said: “This season I’ve been on more of a plant-based diet diet, getting away from all the animals and all that. I had to get away from that.”

Sharing the side effects of his new diet, Irving said: “My energy is up and my body feels amazing.

“Just understanding what the diet is like for me… means I’ve been able to sustain my energy at the highest level.”

Performance

And his high energy levels have so far translated into a very solid performance, according to pundits.

Tom Haberstroh, writing for Bleacher Report, says Irving’s current form is blistering.

He says: “This kind of hero worship is commonplace for the star of the home team having a good night.

“Except this is an away game for Kyrie. The Celtics are playing in ATL, not Boston. Irving is that good.

“He looks like a Harlem Globetrotter and Houdini all in one, darting and dazzling through Atlanta double-teams from start to finish.

“Down the stretch, he’s masterful.”

No plans to change

Irving, who has credited his own research for his transition, told the sports writer that he doesn’t ‘plan on changing anything in [his] diet’.

He added: “It’s working out great so far.”

The NBA star joins a host of top sportspeople who have benefited from ditching animal products this year, including NFL star Griff Whalen, basketball player Wilson Chandler, former rugby player Ben Cohen, and Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton.
