Tory politician Jacob Rees-Mogg says he wouldn’t eat in a vegan restaurant because he would feel ‘disloyal’.

The North East Somerset MP made the comment in a tweet sharing a plant-based food review by disgraced former Waitrose Food magazine editor William Sitwell, who was forced to resign after he used his professional email account to respond to a journalist’s pitch with jokes about killing vegans and now works for The Telegraph.

“As North East Somerset is a dairy farming area I would feel disloyal going to a vegan restaurant but it is good to see William back in the public prints,” Rees-Mogg wrote.

Response

A number of people responded to Rees-Mogg’s tweet, questioning the logic behind his assertion.

“Does that mean that you don’t go to Italian restaurants?” one wrote. “Or eat haggis? You drink french wine, Brandy and champagne not cider. Open your mind a crack, food is food whether you are vegan or not, a restaurant is a tax paying, employing business – you should support that as an MP.”

Another added: “As a former soldier and livestock farmer, the vegan movement is not our enemy. My friends died for people to have freedom to choose what they want to eat. Good luck to them.”
