An undercover video released by vegan charity PETA reveals turkeys being ‘grabbed and yanked’ into a slaughterhouse-bound truck on a ‘heritage’ farm.

According to PETA, Good Shepherd Poultry Ranch supplies ‘happy’ birds to New York-based Heritage Foods USA. The facility has been featured by Vogue and Martha Stewart and the birds are more expensive as a result of the farm’s ‘heritage’ branding.

Footage shows around 1,400 birds being ‘shoved into filthy, cramped cages’ on the truck. PETA claims one turkey had lost her left eyeball, prompting a worker to call her a ‘pirate’. A gasping bird is left on the ground, with workers insinuating they are leaving her there to die.

‘Vegan is the only humane option’

“A ‘humanely raised’ claim means nothing to the bird who faces the same 12-hour journey and slaughterhouse knife as any other turkey used for food,” PETA Executive Vice President, Tracy Reiman, said in a statement.

“PETA urges consumers to recognize that the only humane meal is a vegan one.”

“After a 12-hour journey to Ohio with no food or water, the birds are shackled upside down and their throats slit – just like turkeys killed for Butterball,” adds PETA. “But these are sold for exorbitant prices.”
