A ‘huge drugs bust’ by police at Gatwick Airport this week turned out to be vegan cake mix.

A staff member from award-winning vegan pizzeria Purezza, which has branches in Brighton and Camden, was stopped when police discovered bags of white powder in their suitcase.

Officials tested the powder, before concluding it was not an illegal substance.

‘An eventful time’

“Officers were called to Gatwick airport station at 1.34pm on 28 August after a suitcase was found containing 25 bags of powder,” said a statement from the British Transport Police.

“Following a number of inquiries and tests, it was determined these bags of powder were cake ingredients for a vegan bakery. They were soon reunited with the owner, who has promised officers and staff a slice of cake in return.”

Purezza later Tweeted about the incident, saying: “So, we had quite an eventful time transporting some of our ingredients today…”
