Arsenal
right back Hector Bellerín says his improved recovery is the reason he’s made
his vegan diet permanent.

Recovery

The pro
footballer recently told ESPN that – despite the fact that he’d tried
plant-based eating as a ‘detox’ experiment – he would be sticking to the plan
long term.

He said: “The
recovery after games in my muscles and the long-term injuries that I have had
before have started to recover way quicker.”

“So why
would I change something that is working for me?”

Nutrition

While the move has made the athlete the target of criticism – including that of sports
commenter Alan Brazil
– he maintains that an animal-free diet is nutritionally
adequate.

Bellerín
told MR PORTER:
“When it comes to nutritional literature, everyone is very
old-school… ‘You need milk, eggs, meat!’

“But
actually, you are able to get the same amount of protein, carbohydrates and
vitamins from plants.”
